Aulë, known to the dwarves as The Maker (he created them with the assistance of Ilúvatar), is the Valar who rules and shapes all of the physical matter that composes Arda (Earth) in Tolkien’s world. It is he who shaped the mountains and land masses of the world and is gifted in the area of smithing and craftmanship. Both Sauron and Saruman once served him before turning to evil.
